Thousands of commuters are at risk of having to look at each other on the way home.

One of several free newspapers distributed in London with a cumulative distribution of over 1 million per day, thelondonpaper is closing next month having accumulated debts of over £31m.

thelondonpaper: "dimensions fit the cat's litter tray perfectly"

According to James Murdoch in the Press Gazette, “…the performance of the business in a difficult free evening newspaper sector has fallen short of expectations”.

thelondonpaper employs around 40 journalists.

Reaction so far on Twitter:

“Need an arts writer?” (one of the journos who’s out of a job)

“Oh dear – that means we’ll be stuck with the crap one”

“thelondonpaper’s dimensions fit the cat’s litter tray perfectly.”

“Hope thelondonpaper’s demise means Associated will pull the plug on that hideous rag, London Lite. Once they’ve finished gloating.”

“Good news for those who hate bad writing, tragic for those who need to know what Pixie Geldof did last night”

Free papers in London have a cumulative daily circulation of over 1.7 million – thelondonpaper accounts for roughly 500,000 of this.

“Quality journalism is not cheap, and an industry that gives away its content is simply cannibalising its ability to produce good journalism”
Rupert Murdoch

Fortunately for those in need of commentary on the current state of Lily Allen’s nipples, numerous alternatives are still available.
