The recent BBC News website redesign has proved to be a mixed bag – it’s attractive enough, it’s just that all it seems to be is… bigger. The same massive headline Cameron launches ‘big society’ stared at me all day the other day, and reminded me that I preferred it when BBC News had an option to choose International news as the default, rather than the latest UK Government press release.

With that in mind, here are eight of the places I go to for news most days:

OneWorld

Sustainable development, human rights, environment and world news from a network of sites worldwide, along with jobs, video, opinion and analysis.

Inter Press Service

News from a Southern perspective, focussed on development and globalisation, poverty and civil society – along with multiple languages, podcasts and videos.

GlobalPost

US-based global reporting to over 200 countries from a network of freelance journalists, with a focus on independant journalism and locally based reporters.

Al Jazeera English

Based in Qatar with a network of local correspondents, the English language channel for Al Jazeera covers world news and includes video and blogs (a recent post is Peace bullish or bullshit).

Current.com

A combination of video recommendations from around the web with some great original documentaries make Current worth a look – and they’re on TV as well.

popurls.com

Popurls is an aggregator of the news aggregators – all of the different services that compile user-recommended news and content are themselves compiled here, along with headlines from the leading news sites, all on one page. There’s always something to read.

Feedly.com

OK, this is cheating slightly – Feedly is actually a feed reader, not a source of news, but what it does do is present your RSS feeds in a newspaper style format, categorised and ready to share through Facebook, Twitter, Delicious and other services. Install Feedly on Firefox or Chrome, sync with Google Reader, and catch up on your subscriptions.

If you need some good subscriptions to get you started, here are some of mine.

Also try:

New York Times Global Edition

Guardian Weekly

ReliefWeb

The Onion can be taken more seriously than many news sources

After a short absence, the Big Wide World blog is back online – sorry it’s been a bit quiet lately. I’ve updated the design with something easier to update – the old design could be a little time-consuming, which put me off writing. I’d appreciate your feedback!
